"Direct-sales businesses that rely on home-based representatives to peddle their wares are seeing their sales forces rapidly expand as the nation's unemployment rate soars to nearly 9% and those who lost jobs and nest eggs look for new ways to make money.
We're recession-resistant in the sense that more people come to us during economic hard times for supplemental income or replacement of a lost job," says Neil Offen, president of the Direct Selling Association, the trade group that represents the largest U.S. direct sales companies.

Gloomy Economy Has Not Affected Supplement Sales

The cratered economy is dishing out bad economic news for almost every product category. Car sales, restaurant visits, jewelry and clothing purchases—they all were down in 2008 and are expected to fall further in 2009, as this big, bad recession gets worse before it gets better. As a bit of bright light in an otherwise gloomy consumer environment, however, dietary supplements appear to be bucking the negative sales trend in the United States, according to the most recent sales data from Nielsen Co. For the 52 weeks ending December 27, 2008, vitamin and other supplement sales were up 5.9% to $3.8 billion in food, drug and mass merchandiser stores, Nielsen reports.

GOLDS

Driven by a sense of being the responsible overseer, Gold’s are cautious risk takers. In starting a new venture, they require a well-developed business plan and will quickly move to establish predictability, order, systems and established procedures. Unlike other types they are not likely to be diverted by opportunities outside their stated objectives or tried and true methodology. Rarely ‘dreamers and schemers’ they need other styles, particularly those who can foresee and respond to changing markets and those who are best at handling the crisis of the moment. BLUES
